Trail Ridge Landfill

The City of Jacksonville’s Trail Ridge Landfill covers over 1,000 acres of land with 120 acres permitted for solid waste disposal. The Landfill has been operational since 1992.

LES was selected by the City to design, build, own and operate a generating plant at the site. The project broke ground in April 2008 and the 9.6 MW generating plant began commercial operation in December 2008. The facility utilizes the majority of the City’s currently available landfill gas and there are plans for a 4.8 MW expansion in 2011.

Landfill Energy Systems provided the design, engineering, equipment procurement and installation, permitting, construction and commissioning of the power generation facility. The plant has six Caterpillar 3520 engine generator sets, each producing 1.6 megawatts of power. LES sells the electricity to Jacksonville Electric Authority under a long term agreement. The addition of the Trail Ridge facility made LES the largest provider of landfill gas-to-energy in the state of Florida with a total of 25 MW.

The facility’s environmental benefits are the equivalent of planting over 114,500 acres of forest or removing the emissions from over 80,000 vehicles each year.
