| Carleton Farms Landfill Sumpter, MI - | ||
| This
Sumpter Energy Associates (SEA) facility began as a
4.0-megawatt landfill gas-to-energy plant located at the
Carleton Farms Landfill in Sumpter Township, Michigan. When
the plant began commercial operation in July of 1998, it
housed five Caterpillar 3516 engine generator sets producing
4.0 megawatts of electricity. The original design of the
facility planned for the future expansion of three additional
generating units as the gas supply increased. Two more
generator sets were added in August of 1999, increasing the
plant's electrical production to 5.6 megawatts. A third
generator set was added in April of 2001 bringing the
facility's production capacity to 6.4 MW.
The electrical power generated at the plant is transported 1.5 miles and tied into the Detroit Edison distribution grid. This plant generates sufficient power to provide electricity for over 7,000 homes and businesses in the greater Detroit Metropolitan area. This facility will eventually be expanded to produce 12 MW of power and will become the largest internal combustion landfill gas plant in the state of Michigan. The Carleton Farms Landfill is owned by Republic Waste Services and is located approximately 30 miles west of Detroit. It is a 640-acre landfill that opened in 1993. There are over 90 collection wells in place delivering over 3.4 million cubic feet of landfill gas each day. The plant was designed and built by Landfill Energy Systems, the general manager of SEA. Landfill Energy Systems also performs the daily operation and maintenance of the facility. It is the third landfill gas generating plant owned by SEA in the state of Michigan. |
