| The
Brooks Landfill is a 420-acre landfill located in Wichita,
Kansas. The landfill is owned and operated by the City of
Wichita. The gas collection system covers 250 acres and
consists of 131 vertical wells. The wellfield recovers
approximately 4.0 million cubic feet of landfill gas per day.
This gas is compressed and then sent down a ten-mile HDPE
pipeline to High Plains Corporation. High Plains is an ethanol
producer that uses the landfill gas directly in their steam
boilers for their manufacturing process.
The direct gas facility began commercial operation in August of 1998 and is owned by an LES partnership, Wichita Gas Producers, LLC, which sells the gas and utilizes the Section 29 Tax Credits. The project was honored with the Year 2000 Kansas Pollution Prevention Award for demonstrating exceptional leadership in environmental stewardship and recognizing its cooperative efforts with the City of Wichita. In addition, this project also received the EPA Region VII award in the Renewable Energy / Alternative Energy Sources category. |
